About the project

The Sơn La Safe Fruit project aims to improve the livelihoods of smallholder fruit farmers in northwest Vietnam by leveraging digital tools to enhance VietGAP compliance and strengthen access to quality-assured, inclusive, and competitive domestic and export markets.

The challenges

Seasonal production constraints

  • Short harvest windows (1–2 months for mango and longan) create temporary market gluts and price pressure.

Weak postharvest and compliance systems

  • Thin-skinned longan varieties with short shelf life.

  • Dragon fruit appearance.

  • Limited digital traceability.

  • Paper-based VietGAP compliance systems.

  • High certification and recertification costs.

Rapid expansion

  • Fruit production in north-west Vietnam has expanded rapidly, but corresponding market development has been limited.

Strong production growth

Production is projected to grow significantly by 2025:

  • Total fruit output rising from 321,000 tonnes (2020) to approximately 594,000 tonnes (2025).

  • Particularly strong growth in mango (+39%) and dragon fruit (+33%).

Falling farmgate prices

Production is projected to grow significantly by 2025:

  • Domestic oversupply led to price declines of up to 50% in 2022.

  • Farmgate prices for mango and longan have fallen below production costs in some years.

  • Farmers often operate as price takers, with limited knowledge of export market requirements.

The opportunities

Domestic market

Sơn La produces high-quality mango and dragon fruit and, being closer to Hanoi than Mekong Delta suppliers, enjoys shorter transport times and lower logistics costs. This proximity ensures fresher produce for the domestic market. In addition, growing VietGAP certification allows farmers to access premium supermarkets and specialty ‘safe fruit’ stores.

Export market

High-value fruit exports are a national priority, with Vietnam diversifying beyond China into premium markets such as Japan, Korea, the USA.
